AI in the Classroom: The Revolution That Has Already Arrived (And What Every Parent, Mom, and Teacher Should Ask)
It's nine at night, and your child is using AI to do homework without your knowledge. Here’s what the data says, with sources, about what's happening in classrooms and the questions you can ask this week.
1. It’s here, even if no one rang the bell
It's nine at night, and your child is working on tomorrow’s assignment. You’re in another room, handling your own tasks, and you don’t see that they just asked ChatGPT for help: copied the essay prompt, asked for three ideas, and had a draft in two minutes. They didn’t cheat exactly; they added their own touch, but you have no idea what they asked, what the AI responded, or what happened to that information once it left the screen.
This scene, today, repeats in millions of homes. And here’s the interesting part: almost no school has a clear rule about it yet.
Generative artificial intelligence, programs like ChatGPT that 'converse' with you and generate text, images, or responses based on your prompts, didn’t enter classrooms with an official announcement and a manual. It entered through students’ phones almost overnight, and schools are still trying to catch up.
The data confirms this: in a UNESCO survey of over 450 schools and universities worldwide, less than 10% had a formal policy on the use of generative AI (UN News, September 2023). That means nine out of ten institutions leave it up to students, teachers, and families to decide case by case what’s acceptable and what’s not. Not because they don’t care, but because the technology moved faster than the conversation.
For you as a parent, teacher, or guardian, this isn’t a reason to panic; it’s an invitation to start the conversation at home, even with a simple question like "Did you use AI for this? What did you ask it?".
2. From what age yes, and from which age better not?
It’s different for an 8-year-old asking an AI to explain a multiplication table than for a 15-year-old using it to research a history topic and compare sources. The first is still learning to distinguish what’s true and what’s not; the second should have the tools to question what the machine responds.
That’s why UNESCO set a number: recommends 13 years as the minimum age for children to use generative AI in the classroom (UN News, September 2023). It’s not arbitrary: before that age, according to the organization, children haven’t fully developed critical thinking skills to differentiate a correct answer from one confidently invented by AI (known in tech as 'hallucination': when the system responds with false information as if it were fact).
If children under 13 in your home or classroom are using these tools, it doesn’t mean the world will end, but it’s a sign that adult supervision should be closer, not more distant.
3. Where does your child’s platform activity go?
When your child logs into the school platform to take an exam, submit homework, or answer a quiz, they leave a trail: what they answered, how long they took, where they went wrong, sometimes even which device and at what time. That trail doesn’t just float in the air; someone saves it, and that someone isn’t always the school.
Human Rights Watch investigated 164 educational platforms used in 49 countries during the pandemic, when millions of children shifted to online classes overnight. The result: 146 of those 164 platforms, 89%, had practices that put children’s data at risk, from tracking activity to collecting information without clear permission (Human Rights Watch, May 2022).
It’s not about suspecting every app your child’s school uses; many comply well. It’s about asking the question almost no one asks: if the platform is 'free,' how does it make money? Sometimes the answer, though not stated openly, is from the data of its users.
4. Not all classrooms start from the same point
All this conversation about AI, platforms, and data assumes a certain condition that isn’t true everywhere: that there’s a computer, tablet, or at least a smartphone with good internet in the classroom. In many schools, that assumption still isn’t met.
In Latin America, only 37% of the poorest population has internet access, compared to 75% of the wealthiest (ECLAC). That’s a gap of nearly double, meaning while some schools are debating whether an AI-assisted essay is cheating, others are still struggling to get a Wi-Fi signal that can support the entire class.
This inequality is reflected in how countries react to technology in the classroom: in 2023, only 1 in 4 countries had any regulation on cellphone use in schools; today, it’s 1 in 2 (UNESCO, GEM Report 2023), half the world still without clear rules.
5. So, what can you do this week?
The good news is that neither UNESCO nor any international organization will solve this for you before Monday. In August 2024, UNESCO published AI competency frameworks for teachers and students, focusing on human development, equity, and inclusion (UNESCO), an important step, but applying it to daily classroom or home life still takes time.
Meanwhile, here are three questions you can ask this week, without needing permission or tech knowledge:
If you’re a parent: ask your child, in a non-judgmental tone, "Did you use AI for this? What did you ask it, and what did it say?". The goal isn’t to ban it but to let them talk about it.
If you’re a teacher: ask your school if there’s any policy, even informal, about using generative AI in class. If the answer is "no," it’s not your fault: you’re, literally, the majority.
If you’re concerned about a platform the school uses: check its privacy notice and focus on one thing: does it say what it uses your child’s data for? If not, that’s your answer.
AI in the classroom won’t wait for us to be ready. But asking the right questions, on time, is as valuable as any policy that takes years to develop.
